Geometry in Discourse – Discourse in Geometry
Discursive Geometry is a trend which establishes a new face of geometric art. The artists following this tendency depart intentionally from a strictly formal or philosophical understanding of geometry, while proving the links between it and other domains of artistic creation, fields of science as well as broadly defined contemporary times, i.e. social and cultural phenomena. The essence of this phenomenon is its dialogicality, based upon interpretation and reinterpretation of undertaken issues, as well as deconstruction of the language specific to concrete art.
As we organise the second conference along with accompanying exhibitions, we introduce a series of meetings and presentations, the main purpose of which is to refect upon and provoke discussion on new tendencies in scope of art, expressed by language of geometry as well as identifying challenges for the art posed by current social, cultural technological and artistic transformations.

Grid
The term “grid” refers to the notion of “grate”, “mesh”, “net”. In a broader understanding, it may denote a structure, plan, scheme, layout or connections and existing correlations. As regards the art-focused considerations, and mainly the image, this term is identical with the notion of “composition”, it is a method of establishing artistic order, an organising principle. The grid may manifest itself either as an invisible structural skeleton of a work of art, the tensions existing in its system, interaction of axes and directions, but also as a fgure drawn directly, not only determining specifc artefacts but constituting their essence. The grid is an inseparable feature of morphology of all artistic forms. It can be traced back to ancient times, when Egyptians, Greeks or Romans began to employ the mathematical module for constructing artistic or architectural objects. In later times, the form of grid depends on perspective, i.e. geometric projection refecting a given space. At the beginning of the 20th century, the cleanest form of the grid is emerging – a scheme of parallel and perpendicularly intersecting straight lines. In her book, “The Originality of the Avant-Garde and Other Modernist Myths”, Rossalind E. Krauss perceives the grid as one of the symptoms of the contemporary art and links it, among other things, with efforts for objectivisation of a visual work of art. The grid is empowered to become a subject by avant-garde and neo-avant-garde. In post-modernistic practices, its meaning extends to encapsulate a variety of networks, the relations of complex and variable relations that may be found in all felds of contemporary life. We understand it as a system that integrates and manages the elements of structure and of the resources of its content. It is, among other things, an inseparable element of a digital environment, its matrix, which constitutes the basis for digital processes of creating and transforming images.

Referring to the presented issue, we wish to explore the relations between different meanings of the grid and the visual form, content and contexts of contemporary artistic practices, expressed by the language of the concrete. Our discussion is open and welcomes the artists who represent both classical and new media, in particular painters, creators of multi- and inter-medial forms, critics, curators, art theoreticians and historians, for whom the art of geometry, as well as its contemporary transformation, is an important research feld. Also, the representatives of other humanistic, social and scientifc disciplines are invited. We hope that this meeting will become an interdisciplinary panel, an experience allowing to discover vast interrelations between art and all manifestations of contemporaneity, a seed for further cooperation.

Issues to be discussed:
1. Discursive Geometry – the term, precursors, modern practices, undertaken

discourses, etc.
2. Grid as a structure of painting. Compositions and expression methods of the
art which employs the language of concrete.
3. Grid as links, relations and dependence in art, technology and everyday life. 4. Grid as the element of discourse in modern art of geometry.
5. Grid in artistic practices of mapping, generative art.
6. Grid in avant-garde, neo-avant-garde and postmodernism.
